Hi, I’m Dr. Antonia Hickey, I have worked in community mental health agencies, school settings, long-term care facilities, including skilled nursing facilities and assisted living facilities, agencies serving the unhoused population, and home-based work with clients.

I believe that therapy is an individual, unique, and empowered process for each client that allows them to recognize their inner strengths and inner workings. Each client has their own answers they are searching for and struggles they are trying to overcome in their daily life. During the process of therapy, I strive to help clients develop an increased sense of autonomy and purpose in order to create movement toward these answers.

I work with older adults, adults with chronic illnesses or disabilities, caregivers, and those seeking professional consultation. I support clients navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, aging, grief, end-of-life issues, work and other stress, relational issues, and work disability paperwork or accommodations.

In therapy, I help clients develop healthy ways of coping with stressors, as life is inevitably filled with difficulties and obstacles. I want to help my clients reduce negative thoughts and behaviors, while creating more effective and adaptive thought patterns that allow for healthy living. My goal is to help clients achieve a stable, long-lasting sense of self that encompasses all areas of life by providing a safe and supportive environment where clients can thrive.

My therapeutic style includes providing empathy and validation, gentle challenging, focusing on client strengths, problem-solving, insight-oriented work, collaboration, and encouraging clients to take the lead while offering guidance. I want to focus on helping clients build trust and safety. I want clients to feel empowered, supported, and autonomous while meeting their own goals and creating their own path.

Sessions with me involve letting the client take the lead, asking thoughtful questions, helping clients discover more about themselves and their behaviors or choices, listening and reflecting back the client’s words, encouraging clients to look at situations differently, and helping clients recognize their own tools for coping with difficult situations while creating new tools and routines. Sessions are focused on the client’s needs for that particular session and may be more solution-focused at times.

I hope clients learn that they can meet their goals and make progress, whether that means improvements in their mood or symptoms, healthier behaviors and relationships, enhanced communication, more coping skills, greater perspective on life, or an increased understanding of self and others.

Outside of therapy, I enjoy music, nature, and animals.

I look forward to meeting you and being here alongside you on your therapy journey.
